On this page we are going to talk about how to get rid of common warts. However, this can be confusing because common warts can refer to all warts in general or to a specific type of wart. When we refer to common warts in this article we will be talking about warts in general unless we say otherwise.

What Causes Common Warts?

All common warts are caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV for short. So if you have one or more warts, then you have been infected with this virus. The short video below will give you a very good introductory lesson on warts.

Most recommended treatments to be used when you want to get rid of common warts just concentrate on the wart itself instead on the virus. So even if these treatments succeed in getting rid of your warts, they might just grow back again. Some of these treatments are listed below:

Surgery – your doctor will basically cut out the wart. This can be painful and almost always leaves a scar. Cost is also a big factor. Plus there are no guarantees that warts won’t grow back.

Laser Treatment – This treatment is painful, expensive, likely to leave scars, and can take multiple treatments. Don’t be surprised when warts grow back.

Cryosurgery (freezing the wart)- this causes a blister in the area and hopefully the dead skin and blister eventually fall off. Can take anywhere from 3-4 treatments up to dozens or more for some warts. This can be painful and will leave behind a hole in the skin where the wart was located. Since you still have the virus, warts can grow back. Check out the video below of what your skin looks like after freezing the wart.

Over The Counter Topical Treatments – Could be a pad treated with salicyllic acid or a bottle of concentrated salicyllic acid. Requires repeated applications over a long period of time (up to a year). After each application you use something like an emery board to remove some of the dead skin. The tea tree oil warts removal method works in a similar manner. This takes a long time, is not always effective and does not stop the warts from growing back.

Duct Tape – there are different variations of using duct tape with one being to place a piece of duct tape on your wart for six days. Then remove the tape, soak the area in water and then scrape away parts of the wart with an emery board. This must be repeated many times and results are not guaranteed. Like all other treatments, the warts can simply grow back. See our ‘Does Duct Tape Get Rid Of Warts‘ page for more details.

Prescription Medications – we won’t go into any details but one of thos e used is able to cause genetic mutations! Obviously you will work with your doctor regarding these medications.
